Micheál Doherty’s brace helped Bonagee United to a home rout of Derry City Reserves in horrid conditions at Dry Arch Park.

On a bitch of a night, played through driving sheets of rain that poured down, Jason Gibson’s side cemented their spot in third in the Four Lanterns Ulster Senior League’s standings.

Doherty’s double and goals by Garbhan Grant and substitute Codey Brogan had the hosts well out of reach by the time sub Caoimhin Porter beat Eugene Ferry with a late effort.

Doherty’s first arrived via a 21st minute penalty, dispatched well after Grant was fouled by Conor Doherty.

Six minutes before the break, Grant skipped in to round Daniel Houghton, the Derry goalkeeper, slot home the second.

At the other end, Ferry lost his footing in the conditions, but Republic of Ireland underage international Ronan McKinley was unable to take advantage.

Ferry saved brilliantly from Kieran Farren’s low drive on the hour to keep his sheet clean for the time being.

Soon after, Bonagee added a third in a breakaway move. Grant fed Sean Hume, whose shot was saved by Houghton. Grant was quickest to reach and unselfishly squared to Doherty, who tucked home.

Brogan was on the pitch only a matter of minutes when he beat Houghton with a delightful finish, arrowed into the far corner.

It was late in the night when Ferry was finally beaten, but Porter’s goal was a mere footnote to the tale.

Bonagee United: Eugene Ferry, Darren McMonagle, Jamie Lynagh (Peter Carr 64), Mark Harkin, Tommy McMonagle, Ryan Rainey, Sean Hume, Chris Flanagan, Garbhan Grant, Micheál Doherty (Codey Brogan 69), Jordan Armstrong.

Derry City Reserves: Daniel Houghton, Rhys McDermott, Ethan Harkin (jack Parke 57), Ronan Boyce, Conor Doherty, Connor Gormley, Ronan McKinley, Kian McGarvey, Sean McBride (Caoimhin Porter 54), Kieran Farren, Fionn McClure.

Referee: Marty McGarrigle
