Ronan ‘Ollie’ Doherty is first winner of Tom Bonner Man of the Match Award

THE ULSTER FA introduced the inaugural Tom Bonner Man of the Match Award for yesterday’s Knockalla Caravans Senior Cup final.

The award is in memory of Drumkeen man Bonner, a long-serving official at Ulster FA level, where he served as disciplinary secretary up until his death in January 2015.

The award is a fitting touch by the Ulster FA, who have honoured their former colleague with a trophy in his name.

Cockhill Celtic’s Ronan ‘Ollie’ Doherty was the winner of the award yesterday after his double strike helped to sink Glengad United at Maginn Park.

Doherty netted twice after Malachy McDermott’s opener as the just-crowned Ulster Senior League champions won 3-0 against their Inishowen rivals.

His first saw him step inside a couple of challenges before wonderfully firing past goalkeeper Kevin McLaughlin.

15 minutes from time, Doherty steered in after Garbhan Friel had struck the post.

Doherty received his award from Margaret Bonner, who was accompanied to the game by daughter Edel and son Damian. Also included in the picture are Ulster FA Chairman Ernie Pollock and Ulster FA Secretary Dessie Kelly.
