Philip Deignan confirmed by Team Sky for Giro d’Italia

TEAM SKY HAS confirmed Philip Deignan will compete in the Giro d’Italia, which gets underway this Friday.

Now in his 12th year as a pro, Deignan will be making his ninth Grand Tour appearance at the Giro d’Italia.

His career highlight came on the 18th stage of the 2009 Vuelta a Espana when he battled to a hard-fought win, and that result helped him claim a top-10 overall finish in the process.

The Letterkenny native has taken part in the Giro in 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2014.

Since then the climbing specialist has achieved further victories at the Tours of the Gila, California, Utah, and the USA Pro Challenge, and his experience will be a key attribute over the three weeks of action.

Deignan’s compatriot Nicolas Roche is on the Team Sky squad, along with Mikel Landa, Elia Viviani, Mikel Nieve, David Lopez, Ian Boswell, Christian Knees and Sebastian Henao.

The the Giro d’Italia will start away from home with a time trial in the Dutch city of Apeldoorn on Friday.
