Inishowen rider retained by top mountain bike team

written by Chris McNulty January 13, 2021

INISHOWEN’S Callum Morris has been retained by the Vitus First Tracks Enduro team for the 2021 mountain bike season.

Following a short but successful first season with the team, where the young rider had three podium finishes including wins at Enduro events in Wicklow and Dublin, he impressed the team management and they were keen to keep him, team manager Glynn O’Brien has confirmed

“2020 was a tough and challenging year for everyone,” he said.

“For Irish Cycling it has been no different as events have been postponed or cancelled like many other sports.

“For the athletes is has been particularly challenging as the training and preparation put in for events could all be a wasted effort.  We did manage a very short season though. With all the restrictions in place and the possibility of events being cancelled last minute you had to make it count.”

Morris, the rocket from Ballyliffin, did exactly that and came out of the blocks, guns blazing.

He is no stranger to winning races as he has won everything going in the youth category in recent years.

Moving up to the Under 16 category in 2020 has been very successful as the young Donegal man proved he can mix it with some of the older lads in the category and beat them.

The Vitus First Tracks Race Division are stoked to keep him on board for 2021.

O’Brien said: “We know that Callum is out riding and training in preparation for whatever 2021 brings.

“Give the wee man half a chance and he will be gracing podiums up and down the country. Ireland has produced world champions for mountain biking and there is no reason why he can’t take it all the way if he keeps going the way he is going.“

Riding the latest version of the Vitus Sommet Enduro bike Callum is hoping for a full season of racing following a depleted 2020 season.

Callum said: “Being with the Vitus First Tracks team was a great experience as all of them are so fast it really pushes me on when I’m riding with them just by trying to keep up makes you a lot faster.

“The bike also made a huge difference as I went from a 2014 bike to an up-to-date 2020 Vitus Sommet it was much more stable and easier to go fast.

“My plans for 2021 are to race the First Tracks Enduro cup and the Gravity Enduro races also the Irish downhill mountain bike series and hopefully go over to Scotland or Wales to race some British downhill series events aswell.”
