SHAUNA MCFADDEN and Amanda Gallagher are part of the Irish cycling team for the upcoming European Youth Olympic Festival in Tblisi.

The delegation flew out of Dublin airport yesterday for Georgia. Letterkenny native Shauna is the 15-year-old daughter of Sean McFadden, who is a well known local athlete that has competed in the Rás and won The Race – Ireland’s 24-hour endurance event that took place in Donegal – in March this year.

Shauna (pictured top) has just completed third year at Loreto Convent in Letterkenny and is with Errigal Cycling Club.

She will be joined by Amanda (pictured above), who is from Dunlewey and recently joined Caldwell Cycles in Omagh. Last week, she won gold in the 500TT at The National Youth Track Championships in Belfast.

The 2015 European Youth Olympic Festival will take place in Tbilisi  from Sunday, July 26, to Saturday, August 1.  There will be two disciplines, time trial and road race – the time trials take place on Tuesday, July 28, and two road races on Thursday, July 30.

The Donegal duo are the only girls in the travelling cycling part, while Conor Gallagher, Luke Smyth, Ronan Tuomey are in the boys’ section with reserve Harvey Barnes.

The teams will be managed at the event by Martin O’Loughlin and Nicola McKiverigan.
