Big crowd expected to welcome home Olympic finalist Sinead Jennings

AN OPEN invitation is extended to people for a homecoming reception for Olympic finalist Sinead Jennings in Letterkenny this evening.

The 39-year-old from Hawthorn Heights reached the final of the women’s lightweight double sculls in Rio.

Jennings, competing under her married name of Sinead Lynch – her husband, Sam, is a double Olympian – finished sixth in the final alongside her partner Claire Lambe from Dublin.

Jennings and Lambe made it to the final via an impressive and determined semi-final when they finished third.

In doing so, they became the first Irish female rowing pair to reach an Olympic final, something that Patsy McGonagle – the Irish Athletics Team Manager in Rio – said was the best EVER achievement by a Donegal sportsperson.

Three times previously – without success – she tried to qualify for the Olympics, but last week, after a stop-start week in Brazil, she reached the final at the Lagoa Stadium.

Her fellow townspeople are expected to turn out in big numbers for the homecoming, which is timed for 7.30pm at the Market Square.
