SHAUNA MCFADDEN has been invited to take part in the Women’s Matrix Fitness Grand Prix in the United Kingdom next week.

The 16-year-old Transition Year student from Loreto Convent in Letterkenny will take part on Monday in Stevenage, Tuesday in Crowden and then on Thursday at Portsmouth in the colours of highly-rated UK team SunSport Velo. The action is televised by Sky Sports and ITV4.

The team named 12 riders at the start of the season but McFadden – part of the Nicolas Roche Performance Team -has been asked to join their ranks in place of Kerry’s Josie Knight, who is unavailable to compete due to her attendance at a training camp in Mallocra before the under-23 track championships.

The Matrix Fitness Grand Prix Series works on spectator friendly town and city centre circuits, organised by SweetSpot Group. The events are short and fast on criterium (lapped) basis.

McFadden will also take part in the Curlew Cup Sponsored by Northumberland National Park on June 19.

Lydia Boylan, the Irish national track and road cycling champion, will be part of the same race in the colours of Nottingham-based Team WNT so it will a chance for McFadden to measure her progress against a more experienced field. The next month represents further opportunities for McFadden, who has already excelled in her first season in the senior ranks.

This year, in her first senior outing, McFadden finished second in the annual George Rooney Phoenix Grand Prix Sponsored by Portview Fit-out Ltd on the Nutt’s Corner Circuit in Belfast.

She followed that up with a sixth place finish in Meath and then at the McCann Cup in Omagh in March, sealed her first senior win. Last month McFadden participated in the Tour de Himmelfart in Denmark for the Rytger team

On July 1, McFadden will go to Belgium for three weeks for ‘The Belgian Project’. This is an inspiring initiative run on a voluntary basis by Dany Blondeel in Ireland. The project focuses on talented young riders who have dreams of racing in Belgium and making cycling their career.
