BAILE NA GALLOGLACH defied the elements to post a fine win in the Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta against Gaoth Dobhair this afternoon.

Gaoth Dobhair 1-4 Báile na Gálloglach 1-8

The visitors to Magheragallon from Milford produced an excellent second quarter where they reeled off eight points without replay to go in at half-time 0-8 to 1-0 in front with the breeze.

Gaoth Dobhair scored the first score of the game – a goal from Gary McFadden on 13 minutes. The wing-back played a one-two with Noel Kelly before shooting down low into Coalan McGettigan’s bottom corner.

But Báile na Gálloglach’s eight points in succession – five from Cathal McGettigan in succession, either side of three from Christopher Barrett – gave the away side a five-point half-time lead.

In the last round, Gaoth Dobhair were 0-6 to 0-2 down against Kilcar but used the wind in the second half to come through on a 2-9 to 0-6 scoreline.

Five down today against a team who were competing in the senior bracket for the first time in 15 years, it was expected that the hosts would extract some of their local knowledge to get over the line.

However, Danny O’Donnell, the Milford manager who played his club football not too far from Magheragallon with Naomh Muire, would’ve been delighted with the second half produced by his team.

The only conceded two points in the first 20 minutes of the half with Eamon Collum and Shaun Boyle on target.

Then, 10 minutes from time came the killer blow when Conor McNulty, the corner-back, finished off a fine move for Báile na Gálloglach to put them 1-8 to 1-2 in front. The hosts lost Michael McKelvey to a straight red late on for striking and two scores in injury time –  from Daire Ó Baoill and Boyle – were academic in the end up.
