GARBHAN FRIEL IS a man of many talents – as he showed again on Friday night.

The 25-year-old Buncrana man, who plays football for Irish League Championship club Institute, demonstrated his prowess in the boxing ring again when he won an Ulster Novice Intermediate title.

Friel took victory in the heavyweight division with an impressive and dominant display against Scott Stevenson from Bangor’s Abbey BC.

Friel was on top from the off and the referee, Ian McShane, stopped the bout in the second round with Friel in total command of the 85kgs contest.

Friel had made his ring return earlier this month when he defeated Gary Canning of Carrigart ABC at the Illies Golden Gloves Tournament in the Halfway House, Burnfoot.

The former Cockhill Celtic and Finn Harps striker is these days on the books of Institute – but his talents go beyond the pitch.

Twin Towns BC’s Cathal Gallagher also took victory on Friday night while Christina Reid, also of Twin Towns, won by way of a walkover.
