Waterford issue complaint over Harps defeat, as FAI confirm McEleney’s eligibility

WATERFORD FC have confirmed that they have lodged a complaint to the FAI about Monday’s 1-0 defeat to Finn Harps.

The Blues sent an official complaint to the authorities following the game, which secured Harps’ survival in the Premier Division.

In a brief statement on social media, Waterford said: “Waterford FC can confirm that a complaint has been registered with the FAI regarding our Monday night fixture away to Finn Harps. The matter is with our legal team and no further statement will be made on the matter at this time.”

It is believed that Waterford are contending that Harps defender Shane McEleney should have been suspended for the fixture.

McEleney collected a fifth yellow card in last month’s 3-2 win over St Patrick’s Athletic. He is now listed to serve a suspension in Harps’ FAI Cup quarter-final against Shamrock Rovers.

Originally, Harps were due to face Waterford on Sunday. However, after the game between Shamrock Rovers and Derry City was re-fixed for Saturday last, the final round of games in the Premier Division, including the Harps-Waterford match, were changed to Monday.

This change led to the FAI changing the date of any suspensions which ordinarily would have been due to be served from Monday.

An FAI spokesperson was quoted by the Irish Sun yesterday confirming that McEleney was eligible.

The spokesperson said: “The Disciplinary Committee of the FAI applied an ‘effective from’ date of Tuesday November 10 for suspensions to be imposed after the final series of Premier Division games in the SSE Airtricity League.

“This decision was taken in order to maintain the status quo in respect of the extraordinary circumstances caused by COVID-19 which resulted in the final round of Premier Division fixtures being rescheduled, as permitted by FAI rules.”
