When all was said and done, Eamon McConigley was just glad to see Letterkenny Rovers get the new season off to a winning start.
There was plenty for McConigley to ponder in an action packed Donegal News Ulster Senior League Cup game at Leckview Park.
Rovers were four-up against ten-man Bonagee, who saw sub Mark Harkin dismissed less than a minute after his introduction, but Bonagee managed to come back to 4-3 before new signing Sean McCarron completed his hat-trick to seal a 5-3 win.
“Most teams are trying to gel at this stage and it’s not easy, but we can’t afford to give away goals like that – that’s the bottom line for us,” McConigley observed.
“It can happen very easy when players switch off and they don’t realise that every player has switched off. Doubts can creep in at that stage, but we got that sorted.”
McCarron was the brightest spark on show – and McConigley hopes the former Finn Harps striker can net the goals to bring glory back to his side.
He said: “I always felt there were goals in us.
“Sean is a class player. He seemed to be enjoying himself out there and he scored fantastic goals. He wants to play and he wants to be with us, which is the main thing. I’m delighted that we have him.”
