A DONEGAL footballer has shared the emotional story of how the loss of his brother helps inspire him on the pitch.
Christopher Sweeney was an Ulster and Donegal club championship winner with Gaoth Dobhair in 2018.
As part of Ulster GAA’s Road Safety Week, in conjunction with the launch of the Live To Play social media, Sweeney has spoken of the death of his brother, Hugh, in 2007.
Hugh Sweeney died in January 2007 after his car collided with a bridge at Meenacladdy.
“Hugh was one of those typical 18-year-old,” Christopher Sweeney said.
“He played midfield for his club and for his county, alongside Michael Murphy. He was part of our under-21 team that won the under-21 Championship in 2005.
“He had a good career ahead of him. Unfortunately in 2007, he was traveling in a car that collided with a bridge and he died on impact.
“We never got to see his full potential.”
The Gaoth Dobhair player, in a message targeted particularly to young players, urges them to drive safe, slow down and not to get distracted by mobile phones while behind the wheel.
