USL: It’s ‘seven up’ for Cockhill as champions return to the top

CHAMPIONS COCKHILL CELTIC returned to the summit of the 4 Lanterns Ulster Senior League after they defeated Swilly Rovers in a game that was reversed to Cockhill.

Cockhill Celtic 7 Swilly Rovers 0

Cockhill proved too strong for a young, understrength Swilly Rovers side. Cockhill dominated throughout and broke the deadlock after 10 minutes when the returning Gerry Gill fired in from 18 yards giving Wade no chance in the Swilly goal.

Goal number two came when a Ronan Doherty (o) cross was met at the near post by Gerard McLaughlin who neatly flicked past Wade.

It was three when Malachy Mc Dermott volleyed home from a Gill corner.

Cockhill spurned numerous opportunities to increase their lead but last ditch defending and poor shooting kept the score at three-nil at the break.

Cockhill started much the same in the second half dominating the ball making the Ramelton chase around the pitch.

Following neat interplay between the Cockhill midfielders the ball fell to Jimmy Bradley and the experienced midfielder fired home from 10 yards.

Cockhill introduced two young substitutes on 55 minute, giving Mark Coyle and the returning Paul McDermott a run out.

The two combined brilliantly when McDermott crossed from the right for Coyle to fire home from close range and he repeated the trick again on 75 minutes when he found the unmarked Coyle who powered home a header from close range at the back post.

Swilly

Cockhill saved the best goal to last on 85 minutes when a series of passes left Mark Coyle through on goal and he unselfishly found the inrushing Ronan Doherty (N) who tapped home from five yards.

Cockhill will have tougher games in the forthcoming weeks while Swilly will look to get a few older heads back in the fold to strengthen things.
