COCKHILL continued their winning start to the season with an emphatic win over Letterkenny Rovers.

Cockhill Celtic 4 Letterkenny Rovers 0

Cockhill started brightly and went close in the opening minutes when a Fionn McClure shot whistled narrowly wide.

They opened the scoring on 11 minutes. Corey McBride showed neat footwork in midfield and released James Bradley on the right. His cross was half cleared to Mark Moran who controlled and fired home from the right side of the D.

Letterkenny were well in the game and went close on a number of occasions; with a free kick over the bar after Simon McGlynn was fouled in a dangerous position, a McGlynn shot narrowly over the bar and a scuffed Shane McNamee effort from a Matthew McLaughlin cross.

Cockhill went close on 33 minutes when Corey McBride’s goalbound effort was cleared off the line. They then doubled their lead on 35 minutes when they were awarded a free kick in the area after a backpass was handled.

The free kick was touched to Garbhan Friel, whose shot lacked direction but Oisin McColgan reacted well to divert it to the net.

The second half found Cockhill in control of the game and looking to add to their tally. Friel went close again before substitute Adam Duffy’s deflected shot forced a brilliant low save from Chris O’Donnell.

It was 3-0 on 66 minutes when a McClure corner was buried at the back post by Oisin McColgan for his second of the game.

As if proof were needed that it wasn’t Rovers’ day, a McNamee shot took a deflection but clipped the post.

Adam Duffy completed the scoring on 75 minutes with a great strike.

Great defensive work from Keegan Hegarty resulted in a Cockhill throw in their opponent’s half. Duffy picked up possession, advanced and fired in, off the post, from the edge of the box.
