USL – Cockhill, Derry to vie for top spot and home semi in Cup clash

Top spot in Group A of the Donegal News Ulster Senior League Cup is up for grabs on Saturday when Cockhill Celtic host Derry City Reserves at the Charlie O’Donnell Sports Grounds (kick-off 1pm).

Cockhill have unusually stuttered in the last two weekends.

A draw at home to Derry City and a defeat away to Fanad, both in the Four Lanterns Ulster Senior League, wouldn’t ordinarily represent a crisis for a USL side, but for a side of Cockhill’s consistency it will have been worrying.

On Sunday, they lost in the League for only the second time in five years as Tony McNamee and Oisin McMenamin netted in a 2-0 win for Fanad at Traigh-A-Loch.

Cockhill have to win on Saturday to take top spot from Derry in the group.

Cockhill were held 0-0 by Fanad in September having hammered Swilly 8-1 in their opening game, but Derry defeated both Fanad (4-2) and Swilly (5-2) to take maximum points so far.

The team that finishes top of the group will be at home to Bonagee United in the semi-finals of the Donegal News Ulster Senior League Cup. The runner-up from Group A will be away to Group B winners Letterkenny Rovers in the last four.

Saturday’s game is a repeat of the 2016/17 Donegal News Ulster Senior League Cup final, won 1-0 by Cockhill Celtic.
