Urris GAA club mark Golden Jubilee with new history book

TO MARK the club’s Golden Jubilee, the Urris GAA club have launched a new history book.

‘From Humble Beginnings to Crampsey Park’ chronicles the history of the Urris club, from its inception in 1969 right up to the present day.

The book was officially launched by the GAA President, John Horan, at the club’s 50th anniversary banquet on Sunday night at the Ballyliffin Hotel.

The publication was edited by Rose Kelly, the Urris GAA club PRO.

The book, priced at €10, is available from Catriona’s Newsagents  Clonmany, Mullins Shop Ballyliffin, by contacting Rose on 0877770639 or any Committee member. 

John Horan, the GAA President, and his wife Paula were present on Sunday for Urris’s big bash.

Special appreciation awards were presented to the founding members of Urris GAA from 1969 and to John Friel for his 50 years of unbroken service to the club. 

Local Gaelic Games journalist and broadcaster Tom Comack was MC on the night. 

Donegal County Board Chairman Mick McGrath, County Board Administrator Noreen Doherty, Fr Brian Brady and former Donegal manager Mickey Moran, who has close ties to Urris and who has aided the club’s teams in recent years, were other special guests.

Author of 'Boxing In Donegal: A History (2021)' - the definitive history of the sport in County Donegal - and 'Relentless: A Race Through Time', the 2019 memoir of former Irish Athletics Team Manager Patsy McGonagle. From St Johnston and now based in Letterkenny, Chris was a nominee for NUJ Sports Journalist of the Year in 2010. Honoured by the Donegal Boxing Board in 2016 for his coverage on the sport.
