SEVEN TWIN TOWNS BC boxers will take part in the prestigious Celtic Box Cup in Dungarvan, County Waterford, this weekend.

Current Irish champions Donna Barr and Ciara Anderson are among those who’ll take to the canvas in the south-east.

On Saturday night, Barr, a native of Strabane was the recipient of the John McLaughlin Memorial Cup, award to the Best Intermediate Boxer, at the Donegal Boxing Board’s annual awards function in the Abbey Hotel.

Last year, Barr won the National Intermediate 50kgs title when she defeated Golden Cobra’s Kirsty McCarthy, having previously tasted success in Novice Intermediate and Under-21 finals.

Anderson is a grand-daughter of former Irish Olympian Brian Anderson senior. The Ballybofey woman won the 2014 Youth 1 title at 46kgs and is on the rise up the sport.

Barr competes at 51kgs this weekend with Anderson on the scales for the 48kgs division.

Barry Gillespie, an Irish Youth champion in 2000, is pencilled in to make a ring return at 71kgs, as is Paul Darby.

They’re joined at 71kgs by a familiar face in the form of Ballybofey’s Lee Bradley, now boxing under the banner of Olympic BC in Galway. Bradley won five colleges titles during his days in the vest of the Twin Towns club.

2014 Ulster finalist Barry Doherty will go in the Intermediate B 67kgs grade in Dungarvan and Cathal Gallagher is set to try his hand at Intermediate B 71kgs.

Teams from Ireland, UK and throughout Europe will compete while organisers have confirmed entries from Australia and Dubai

Founded in 2013 by Gerry O’Mahony, the Celtic Box Cup is already considered one of the most prestigious tournaments on the international boxing circuit.

Current Irish Elite champions Myles Casey, Dervla Duffy, Kelly Harrington, Clare Grace and Dean Gardiner have entered for the three-day event.

Five-time Irish Elite champion Eric Donovan, a European Elite medallist, will also compete on Suirside, along with 2015 Elite finalists Joanne Lambe, the 2014 Elite champion, Matthew Tinker, and AIBA World Youth silver medallist Christina Desmond.
