Tributes paid following death of noted Buncrana sportsman Derek Smith

TRIBUTES have poured in following the sudden death of noted Buncrana sportsman Derek Smith this weekend.

The late Mr Smith played soccer, Gaelic football and golf with distinction. He was a winner of the Ulster Senior League with Buncrana Hearts in 1993, while he also played for the club in the Derry & District and Inishowen Leagues.

Smith was the captain of the Hearts team that won the USL and Buncrana Summer Cup double in ’93.

“Derek was part of our club for over forty years as a player, chairman and committee member,” Buncrana Hearts said in a tribute. “Derek will always hold a special place in the history of our club.”

Buncrane GAA club hailed the man who scored 1-1 in their Donegal Junior Championship winning team of 1988.

“He had been a player, coach and member of the club from it’s foundation and he will be sorely missed by all,” Buncrana GAA club said.

“Derek was a true legend and carried out excellent work off the pitch over the last number of years for the club.

“He will be sorely missed by all children that had the honour of receive his excellent and patient coaching.”

Buncrana Golf Club said his passing was met with ‘complete shock and disbelief’.

“The totally unexpected and sudden passing of our dear friend and golfing colleague Derek Smith has left a numbness and profound sadness in the air,” Buncrana Golf Club said.

“Derek was an immense character and a gentleman who had a pure heart of gold, always on hand when needed and would help out in any way he possibly could.

“A great golfer, footballer, fisherman and friend. Derek will be sadly missed by everyone who came to know him and especially so here at Buncrana Golf Club where he was held in such high esteem by everyone.”

Derek Smith is survived by his wife Sharon, daughter Rachel, sons Gavin and Paul, granddaughter Cailin, brother Shaun, sister Denise and a wide circle of friends and family.
