Three from Finn Valley excel at International Cross-Country in Derry

Three Finn Valley AC athletes competed for Ireland in Saturday’s annual British / Irish Masters Cross-Country International in Derry.

Dermot McElchar, Kay Byrne and Noreen Bonner all excelled at the event.

Dermot is a recent recruit to the athletics scene, only coming on board in recent years, was one of two Donegal athletes in the over-40 team, the other being Karol Duggan, had an astounding run scoring on team in third, the Irish beating England and taking gold.

There was great excitement as what seemed like hundreds of Finn Valley club-mates had travelled the short distance to support, including his wife Aine and extended family .

Kay Byrne was back in action recently after a frustrating period of injury and was on team placed second and thoughts went back to the world cross-country in Budapest some years ago, Kay’s first international outing.

Noreen Bonner continued her recent good form  scoring on the winning over-60 women team and what a few weeks it’s been for Noreen as in posting 3.27 in recent Dublin marathon winning her Irish championship category she has been rewarded for focused hard training.

Interestingly there was no wild celebrations after the event as all three turned out in the Remembrance 10k at Finn Valley on Sunday morning.
