Irwin Racing’s Thundersport trophy haul continues to grow following another successful weekend competing in the competitive British series.
Racing at the unique Rockingham circuit the Oasis Bar Letterkenny and Clean Rubber Sligo/Donega- backed team picked up six more podium finishes with Rhys Irwin collecting four first places from his four races while older brother Caolán recovered from issues in qualifying to pick up two more trophies.
Due to mechanical failure for qualifying Rhys had to start the race from the back of the grid but things began to improve straight away in Saturday’s first race.
A very determined Rhys battled his way into the lead of the Aprilia RRV 450 class.
Lapping faster than many of the more powerful Twin machines he was sharing the track with, he took his second class win of the year, along with fastest race lap.
Starting at the back again for the second race, the Oasis Bar and Clean Rubber backed Aprilia once again blasted through the field to take a second class win of the day with the fastest race lap.
Having set the pattern on Saturday the team continued to add to their win tally, as once more Rhys took the class win and the fastest lap. The final race of the weekend saw the younger Irwin brother really up his game, cutting a second and a half off his best time, to lap on the pace of the faster Production Twin machines, on his way to victory number four.
While Rhys was completing a clean sweep brother Caolán was gradually working closer to the front.
Race one saw him make a slight improvement in lap time over qualifying as he moved up to seventh by the finish.
Further fine tuning overnight finally brought the improvement that the team were looking for and helped Caolán to improve further in Sunday’s opening race.
Following a climb from seventh on the grid he finally got back on the Elite class podium for the first time since his victory at Cadwell Park in May.
With the Yamaha Superstock 600 now sorted Caolán set about finishing the weekend on a high as he battled his way through from seventh on the grid.
Setting fastest Elite class lap, he worked his way through to second, but ran out of laps to close down the leader and had to settle for his second podium finish of the weekend.
“I’m so happy to be back on the podium after struggling yesterday” was Caolán’s reaction after race three.
“The boys turned my bike inside out to make it work to my liking and I really wanted to win the last race for them. I caught the leader but in the end ran out of time and had to settle for what I had.”
Rhys was naturally delighted with his first ever 100% result in the RRV450 class.
“I’m delighted to have taken four wins here at Rockingham, especially after such a poor start to the weekend. I’m feeling really confident about the rest of the season now as that’s seven race wins in a row for me. The Championship is not over yet as there are still ten races to go but I will need to keep up this form if I am to take the title.”
Both boys thanked James Gallagher from Oasis Bar Letterkenny and Wesley and Grace Ann Regan from Clean Rubber Donegal/Sligo for their on going financial support.
Irwin Racing will be back in action this coming weekend at rounds 13 -15 of the Masters Championship at Mondello Park before their Thundersport campaign continues at Anglsey on August 27th & 28th.
