St Johnston give champions a scare, but comeback falls short

ST JOHNSTON gave defending champions Bridade a scare in the Long’s SuperValu League Group A on Saturday.

The Saints went within 29 runs of an upset, inspired by Jack Macbeth’s unbeaten 97.

Led by Iftikhar Hussain’s 88 helped take Brigade to 193 for the loss of eight wickets in their 40 overs.

Hussain was caught by Scott Macbeth off the bowl of David Anthony, who was the pick of the hosts’ bowlers.

David Barr made 42 and Adam McDaid weighed in with 29 for the Beechgrove men.

The gauntlet was down for St Johnston, but the Donegal side were undeterred and they were a whisker away from a surprise win,

Jack Macbeth was on song with his 97 including ten fours and four sixes.

His brother Scott Macbeth was run out on 16 and their father Ian Macbeth made 15 before being bowled LBW by Barr.

Andy Britton claimed four wickets for Brigade and St Johnston were 29 shy when all-out on 164 runs.
