It’s all square in a game of chances between Glenswilly and Gaoth Dobhair

GAVIN MCBRIDE’S LATE free salvaged a draw for Gaoth Dobhair at Glenswilly this evening.

Glenswilly 1-8 Gaoth Dobhair 1-8

Niall Friel’s 18th minute goal helped Gaoth Dobhair into a 1-4 to 0-4 half-time lead, but Christopher McMonagle’s goal brought Glenwilly back into it and they could have won it but for a missed penalty in the 53rd minute.

Philip O’Donnell was brought to ground as he fetched Joe Gibbons’ ball in but Caolan Kelly saw his penalty saved by Christopher Sweeney.

Cathal Gallagher punted the ’45 between the sticks, but McBride leveled it up with a free.

Both teams had chances to win it, but neither could convert a winner.

Glenswilly, with a pair of Gary McFadden frees coming either side of an Oisin Crawford point, started well and raced into a 0-3 to 0-1 lead by the 15th minute.

Two Eoin Ward points kept Gaoth Dobhair in touch and they bagged a goal when McBride drove at Glenswilly and his shot was turned away by James Gallagher, but Friel drove to the net.

McBride and Paul Mulligan put three between them at the break, but Glenswilly drew level when McMonagle fisted home from close range after a long ball in by Caoimhinn Marley just two minutes into the second half.

A minute later, Sweeney denied Darren McGinley with a fine save after McMonagle turned provider and Gallagher converted the resulting ’45.

An excellent Crawford point, his second of the game, had Glenswilly two up and Kealan McFadden restored that cushion after McBride knocked over a free.

There was plenty of drama late in the night with McBride’s frees crucial as Gaoth Dobhair came back for a point – after having Kevin Cassidy sent off for two bookings – while Glenswilly saw Brian Farrelly red carded after the final whistle.
