‘Smart meals’ – Former Donegal ace Cassidy’s new venture to make dieting easier

Kevin Cassidy always took a keen interest in his nutrition – but now the former Donegal star is offering players and public a new way to look after their diet.

Cassidy and fellow Gweedore man Sean Tianihad have teamed up to launch Smart Meals Donegal – which is described as ‘a convenient and healthy meal delivery service to cater for athletes, fitness advocates, & those wishing to make healthy dietary changes.’

Smart Meals Donegal offer two meal plans, which will provide customers with two meals per day, five days a week – delivered to their door!

“We did a trial with the Gaoth Dobhair lads and it worked wonders,” says Cassidy, whose side face Crossmaglen in an Ulster Club SFC semi-final in Omagh on Sunday.

“The players would have needed more substantial food for training and their schedule, but you could see the difference.

“When I played for Donegal, we always got our diet sheets and that, but there was no wild knowledge about it. You didn’t really know what to get. It’s the same if people go to the shop, they might want to diet but they’re not really sure how much of everything to get.

“This takes that out of it.”

The low carb, low calorie fat loss meal plan costs €65 per week, with a high carb, high calorie meal plan available for €80 per week.

“Nutrition is massive now. I lost 5kg with this in no time,” Cassidy says.

The plans offer meals such as cajun chicken, kale and baby potato salad; Italian meatballs and buckwheat spaghetti; chicken and chorizo and quinoa salad; chicken fajita bowl; and creamy buffalo chicken.

Tianihad has been working as a chef in Teach Mhici for three years.

“We’ve been thinking about this for a long time now,” he says.

“We sparked a conversation one day, just about Kevin’s sport and how he was trimming down. I have done a lot of research and know the right measurements – how many grammes, how much protein – what works and what doesn’t.”

The official launch is this weekend and Smart Meals Donegal are now taking orders by email at smartmeals.ie@gmail.com – orders need to be placed by Tuesday 13th Nov latest.

Cassidy added: “The one thing I always said was if it tastes horrible, forget about it! But the food actually tastes lovely here. There’s something there to suit everyone and Sean will guide anyone who needs guidance.”

First, he has a date with Cross – with a place in an Ulster final at stake and a chance to return to dine at the top table in Ulster football!
