Shay Given ruled out of Euro 2016 play-off

SHAY GIVEN IS SET to miss the Republic of Ireland’s Euro 2016 play-off against Bosnia after a knee problem resurfaced this week.

The 39-year-old, Ireland’s number 1, has not played since a twisted knee injury forced him out of action during the 1-0 win over Germany in Dublin.

Given was on the bench for Stoke City’s Carling Cup game against Chelsea this week, but was not in the Potters’ matchday squad for today’s 0-0 draw against Newcastle United.

“Shay was in training the other day and unfortunately his knee blew up,” Stoke manager Mark Hughes said.

“He has got a piece of loose bone in the knee, which we hoped would just settle down.

“But it has raised its head again and it looks like he might have to have a procedure to deal with it. I am not sure if that decision has been made yet but that is probably what will happen.

“He won’t be available for that (the play-off). I will be very surprised.”

Meanwhile, Seamus Coleman will be absent from Everton’s squad for tomorrow’s Premier League game against Sunderland tomorrow, but the Killybegs man is not considered a doubt for the Bosnia game.

“He has a stomach bug,” Everton manager Roberto Martinez said.

“Nothing too serious but he has obviously lost a lot of weight.”
