Shay Given is back in training as he hopes to find a new club

Shay Given is in training with non-League side Macclesfield as he bids to get himself a new club.

The 41-year-old Lifford man left Premier League outfit Stoke City at the end of the season and has not yet given up on finding employment over the summer.

Given is one of three former Premier League players training with Macclesfield. Alex Bruce, who left Hull at the end of the season and Wes Brown, who was released by Blackburn, are also training at the Silkmen, who came ninth in the Vanarama National League and were FA Trophy finalists at Wembley.

It is not believed that Given is on trial, but rather is at the club to maintain his fitness levels and to undertake coaching.

Given has been taking his coaching badge, but remains hopeful of getting a contract at a club for the 2017/18 season.

Given made five Premier League appearances for Stoke last term, all of them at the start of the season.

Given, capped 134 times by the Republic of Ireland, was in the Ireland squad for three major tournaments – the World Cup in 2002, Euro 2012 and Euro 2016 – and retired from international football for a second time last summer.
