Serious injury avoided as marquee blown through roof of GAA clubhouse

THE clubhouse at the Naomh Columba GAA club in Glencolmcille was extensively damaged on Monday afternoon when a ‘freak’ gust of wind toppled a marquee onto the rood of the building.

The facilities at Páirc na nGael were being used for the annual agricultural show, which drew a large crowd to the area.

At around 2pm on Monday, the marquee, which had been situated just in front of the clubhouse, was lifted by the strong gale.

“The marquee just took flight in a serious, freak gust of wind,” said Naomh Columba chairman John Joe Doherty.

“It’s actually fortunate that no-one was killed or seriously injured because there were a lot of people in the vicinity on Monday.”

The clubhouse was developed in 2008 when Naomh Columba hosted the All-Ireland Comórtas Peile na Gaeltchta finals.

Doherty, a former Donegal player and manager, said: “There’s a reasonable amount of damage done to the clubhouse. We haven’t had it assessed yet, but it’s quite clear that it’s extensive.

“It’ll be out of commission for some time now. We have to make the surrounding area safe before anyone can go near it.”

A clean-up is in operation and Naomh Columba have appealed for assistance.
