Sean Dunnion: “We had to listen to what our clubs were telling us.”

Donegal County Board Chairman Sean Dunnion says that the clubs of the county gave ‘a very strong mandate’ to vote for radical new proposals that were voted through at the GAA’s annual Congress today.

The ‘Super 8’ series, whereby two groups of four will now form a round robin format for the All-Ireland SFC quarter-finals, came into being after 76 per cent of delegates voted in favour.

The GPA and the newly-formed Club Players Association were both opponents of the proposals, but their views fell upon deaf ears.

Donegal voted for the proposals and Dunnion said: “The clubs gave us a very strong mandate at the February meeting to support the proposals.

“The clubs, over the last number of years, indicated that they need more windows for club football and the current structure wasn’t allowing us to give a definitive plan. That is why we were supportive of the proposals.

For the first time now we have a definitive championship season for clubs. We still need to create more windows for clubs. A lot more work has to be done, but today is the first step.

“We had to listen to what our clubs were telling us.”
