Seamus Coleman closes in on comeback as Irish captain takes part in training

Seamus Coleman was back doing some ball work at Republic of Ireland training today meaning the Killybegs man isn’t too far off a return to competitive action.

The Ireland captain has been out since suffering a double leg break in the World Cup qualifier against Wales at the Aviva Stadium in March.

Coleman joined up with Martin O’Neill’s squad for the play-off with Denmark. Coleman traveled with the team to Copenhagen for Saturday’s first leg.

Although he won’t play tomorrow night in Dublin as Ireland look to clinch a place at next summer’s World Cup, Coleman is nearing his comeback.

“You know what kind of player he is, he’s a fantastic player and he’s at the top of his game in the Premier League,” said Irish defender Cyrus Christie, who has taken Coleman’s right-hack berth in the absence of the Everton player.

“Obviously Séamus is a massive miss. Everyone knows that.

“He’s probably been the best full-back in the Premier League in the last few years so he’s been a big miss and big boots to fill but hopefully I’m doing an OK job.”
