There is widespread sadness across Donegal following the death of popular former Donegal GAA goalkeeping coach Pat Shovelin.

Aged just 41, he passed away in the company of his family at home in Doneyloop.

Pat is survived by his wife, Chrissie, and two young boys, Ethan (5) and Tom (16 months).

Earlier this year, he opened up about his battle with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare form of cancer that took a grip of him last winter.

A native of Ardara who worked in the medical records section of Letterkenny University Hospital, he is best remembered for his role as a GAA goalkeeping coach when Donegal won the All-Ireland in 2012.

Pat Shovelin lines up with Jim McGuinness and the Donegal backtoom team before the All-Ireland final in 2014

He was the goalkeeping coach for Jim McGuinness’s tenure as Donegal U21 and senior manager and involved for three Ulster Championship wins and an Ulster U21 title under McGuinness.

This year, he was goalkeeping coach for Declan Bonner’s Donegal U21s who won the Ulster U21 Championship.
