Donegal Women's League

Ruthless Lagan ladies stay on course with another big win

LAGAN HARPS are a team on a real retention mission in the Donegal Women’s League with Finn Valley the latest unfortunates on the wrong end of the stick.

Finn Valley 1 Lagan Harps 8

Bríd McGinty’s team are in ruthless form these days and Amy Boyd’s hat-trick helped fire them to a big win over newcomers Finn Valley at the Finn Valley Centre this evening.

Lagan were five up at half-time and rendered even the introduction of Katy Herron and Grainne Houston at the mid-way point a futile exercise by the hosts.

Houston did get a goal back and a wonderful finish it was, but the damage had long since been inflicted by the champions.

Lagan, following a 5-0 win over Glenree on Thursday night in Manor, were off and running when Orla Friel netted the first of her two goals.

The in-form Nadine Crawford shot from wide and her effort flew across goal to Friel at the far post and she applied the finish.

Caroline Gallagher beat Lyndsay McElchar for a second, a fine hit from distance.

Gallagher extended the lead with another bullet from outside the box and a close-range goal by Friel made it 4-0.

Boyd got in on the act when she turned home a rebound following a save by the overworked McElchard.

Finn Valley rang the changes at the break, but Lagan continued to press and Crawford was unlucky when she let fly from 25 yards, but her shot crept wide.

Amanda Callaghan’s deflected effort added to Finn Valley’s woe, but Houston brought them some cheer with a delightful chipped effort past Niamh Mailey.

Boyd surged clear and got around McElchar for her second and Lagan’s seventh, before Mari Herron and Danielle McDevitt swapped chances at either end.

The final goal of the night arrived from Boyd, who riffled high to the net for goal number 8.

Finn Valley: Lyndsay McElchar, Ellen Keegan, Aisling Grieve, Cathy Callaghan, Lisa McCafferty, Caitlin O’Loughlin, Louise Roddy, Anita Gallagher, Ridhceall Doherty, Clara Bradley, Mari Herron. Subs used: Jennifer McMenamin, Katy Herron, Grainne Houston.

Lagan Harps: Niamh Mailey, Aine Deasley, Orla Friel, Aoife Page, Kaneshia McKinney, Caroline Gallagher, Amanda Callaghan, Nadine Crawford, Danielle McDevitt, Amy Boyd, Ciana Brogan.

Referee: Liam McLaughlin.

Bonagee to be awarded three points as Glenree fail to field

THIS evening’s other game in the Donegal Women’s League was called off at the 11th hour after Glenree United couldn’t field against Bonagee United. It means that Bonagee can expect to be awarded the points for the game, ahead of a big showdown with leaders Lagan at Orchard Park next Tuesday evening.

Before that, Bonagee will host St Bernard’s from Galway in round two of the WFAI Intermediate Shield on Sunday at 5pm at Dry Arch Park.
