Raphoe duo on Irish Under-16 hockey squad in Holland

RAPHOE Hockey Club duo Ben Wallace and Alexander Tinney are in Holland this week with the Ireland Under-16 squad.

Wallace and Tinney were named in the squad by Niall Denham for the Volvo Six Nations Tournament being held at the BHV Push club in Brenda from Saturday 18-Friday 24 July.

Raphoe man Wallace and Manorcunningham native Tinney are both students at the Royal and Prior and made waves last year when they played on the Ulster squad that won the Under-16 Interprovincial Tournament in Dublin.

They were also part of the Ulster squad that won the 2013 version of the same competition and play for the Raphoe seniors.

They trained twice a week in Banbridge and traveled to Dublin twice a month for training after making the cut back in February.

“It’s a great honour for the club to have two lads selected for Ireland,” said Rodney Bates, senior team coach at Raphoe.

“They both have a great attitude. We took them into the senior team this year and we’d have been asking where they played. They would play anywhere, they’re full of confidence and they’ve shown that they’re ready to step up.”

The schedule is: Saturday 18 July v Holland at 1pm; Sunday 19 July v Germany at 11am; Tuesday 21 July v Spain at 3.15pm; Wednesday 22 July v Belgium at 11.15am; Friday 24 July v England at 11.15am.
