Quigley’s Cullen bout KO’d for now by Covid as Matchroom plan July date

JASON Quigley’s next professional fight – which had been mooted for early May – has become the latest victim of the Covid-19 crisis.

Quigley (18-1, 14KOs) had been gearing up for a May 2 showdown with Jack Cullen (18-2, 9KOs) on the under crd of the Dillian Whyte v Alexander Povetkin bout at the Manchester Arena.

Katie Taylor was slated to meet Amanda Serrano in a much-anticipated class on the same bill.

However, in line wit the British Boxing Board of Control and Government guidelines, Matchroom Boxing has postponed all scheduled events in the month of May.

The Lee Selby-George Kambosos Jr card in Cardiff, planned for May 9, and the Okeksandr Usyk-Derek Chisora dust-up, which had been set for May 23 in London, have also been postponed as well as the May 2 show in Manchester.

The Whyte-Povetkin fight has been rescheduled to July 4, although this is subject to the developing situation around the spread of coronavirus.

Matchroom Boxing said in a statement: “The health and safety of the boxers, staff, event contractors and fans involved with our events remains the top priority for Matchroom Boxing and we thank everyone for their understanding.

“We look forward to bringing world class boxing events back to these shores as soon as it is safe to do so.

“Our thoughts are with everybody affected by the COVID-19 outbreak at this difficult time.”

Under the watch of new trainer, Andy Lee, Quigley recorded third-round KO wins against Abraham Cordero and Fernando Marin either side of Christmas and has recently climbed back into the top 15 of the WBC World Rankings.
