Portsalon Golf Club notes – Michael Martin wins captain’s prize

On Saturday last the first major golfing event on the Portsalon golfing calendar was staged with the playing of Dr Paul Armstrong’s Captains Prize.

 

The event played in different weather conditions with the early and the later golfers getting the best of the day. On the day upwards on 200 played. The large turnout showed the esteem the members hold for their captain Paul Armstrong. The excellent weather coupled with the course condition despite some tricky pin positions led to some excellent scoring.

The overall winner and first time major winner was local man Michael  Martin (22) with 38 points BOT .Runner up Aidan Cannon (18) 38 points BOT, Gross Stephen Connolly (7) 29 points, 3rd Peter Doherty (22) 38  points BOT, 4th Colm Mc Conigley  (11) 38  points BOT5th Andy Boland (14) 37 points. Best nines went to PauL Shields and Pascal Cullen.

The committee prize went to John Strain, Past Captains prize Patrick Shields A special prize went to Dermot Boyce who recorded an 3 on the 8th par 5 hole.The CSS was 34  points.. The Captain Paul Armstrong thanked everyone who turned on this his special day at Portsalon Golf Club.

He thanked the members who bestowed the honour of Captain on him. He thanked the greens staff who had the course looking in such magnificent condition. He thanked Roisin Gibbons and her staff who looked after all who played. He thanked the frontline staff Niamh Mc Ginley who put in long hours to ensure the event ran smoothly. He officially welcomed Billy Mc Cauley who recently took up his new position Finally he welcomed and thanked his wife and his family for all their support during this his year as Captain.

Presidents Day

Following all  the excitement of open week, the Captains prize and the Barton Cup this week end the members of Portsalon Golf Club will contest for  final golfing major of the year as the players from the Kingdom club will contest for Garrett Horkan’s Presidents Prize on Saturday 15 th August.  

Throughout Garret’s golfing career he held the title of Club  Captain and has represented Portsalon Golf Club on various golf teams.The Captain Paul Armstrong and the members of Portsalon golf club wish  our club President Garrett Horkan every success on this his special and historic day at Portslaon golf club.

A time sheet is in operation for this event and at the time of going to press there are a few time slots available, so contact 074 9159459 to ensure your place in this major event. Presentation of prizes will take place at approx 9.30 p.m and all prize winners are asked to be in attendance.

Team News

Portsalons Donegal League team travelled to Buncrana for the first leg match on Sunday last and came away with three matches to Buncrana’s two matches.

Barton Cup

The Barton Cup open  match play event, first played for in 1899 was again played on the August Bank Holiday this year. The event again attracted a large number of  competitors including a host of  past winners. The first match which teed off promptly at 8.00am and the golf continued throughout the day.. The golf was very competitive and a significant number of  matches went to tie holes.  

The final will be  contested between Ryan Mc Gettigsan and Damian Hannigan and due to the failing light the final will be played at a later date. The Mc Menamin Plate winner was Pat Horner who defeated Donal Callaghan in final. The Club Captain Paul Armstrong would like to thank all who played and a special thanks to the organisers for all their work in both preparations and on the day. He thanked Paid Mc Memanin for his sponsorship

Results

In the lead up to the Captains Day the club staged a scramble competition and thee winners were Tracey Mc Bride, Eamon Mc Conigley and Andy Boland, runners up Noreen McConigley, Derirdre O’Toole, Jackie Friel and Sean Barrett. The winner of the competition staged on Sunday last was winner Paddy Mc Groarty(12) 38, Runner up Chuck Mc Taggart (11) 37. The CSS was 36 points.

Special Draw

The result of the July draw was winner Patrick Crerand €140, 2nd Gerry Hannon €80, 3rd Brian Boyle€40, 4th John Ward €20. The next dray is scheduled for the last Saturday in August. Tickets are available from the office, bar and committee members.
