Popular GAA coach Pat Shovelin to be buried in his native Portnoo tomorrow

Pat Shovelin, the late former Donegal GAA goalkeeping coach, will be laid to rest in his native Portnoo tomorrow.

He passed away on Saturday evening following a battle with an aggressive and rare form of cancer, cholangiocarcinoma.

He died at home at Kelly’s Meadow, Donnyloop, Castlefin, surrounded by his loving family.

He is survived by wife Chrissie, Sons Ethan and Tom, mother Margaret, sister Susie, brothers Michael and Gavin and a wide family circle.

Throngs of people are attending the wake in Donnyloop to pay their respects to a popular and much-loved figure, whose story touched people all across the country and beyond.

Pat – goalkeeping coach in 2012 when Donegal won the All-Ireland – made public his fight with cancer, a battle he met with courage, bravery and dignity.

The wake continues today from 11am to 9pm at his home.

Funeral from there on Tuesday for 11am Mass at St Columba’s Church, Donnyloop with burial afterwards in St Conal’s graveyard, Kilclooney, Portnoo.

Family flowers only. Donations in lieu, if desired, to Oncology Services, Letterkenny University Hospital or the Irish Cancer Society c/o James McGuinness & Sons, Funeral Director, Glenties.
