The finals of the medium to large schools Donegal Sports Hall Athletics took place yesterday at the Aura Leisure Centre, Letterkenny.
Children form all across Donegal took part in a quality exciting event with individual class and effort on show in an atmosphere of fun and excitement.
With 12 different athletic disciplines in running, jumping and throwing the teams from the participating 9 school finalist had to be at their very best to get to the top of the leader board which in this case is a points total accumulated by the team of 13 children.
The future of athletics in Donegal looks bright with some of the individual brilliance on show yesterday from children as young as 8 years of age. Great credit is due to the teachers and coaches in the primary schools who support the programme in preparing the teams to allow them to be their very best.
The support of the local athletics clubs was also evident yesterday with a combination of club officials helping to run the event which is coordinated by Donegal Sports Partnership.
When the final tallies were added the Letterkenny schools were to the fore with Scoil Mhuire gan Smál and Scoil Colmcille from Letterkenny achieving the most points across the four categories 3rd /4th class girls, 5th/6th class girls and 3rd / 4th class boys and 5th /6th class boys.
The four winning teams now go forward to represent Donegal in the national finals which take place in Athlone on the 22nd March.
The Donegal Primary Schools Sports Hall Athletics Programme is coordinated by Donegal Sports Partnership with the assistance of the Donegal Athletics Board and Athletics Ireland.
67 schools commenced the programme in October 2016 with approximately 2,500 children participating along the way.
The finals of the small schools SHA takes place in Aura on the 16th March with 9 finalists taking part.
