Paul Durcan reportedly won’t be returning the play Championship for Donegal

IT HAS TODAY been reported that Paul Durcan will not be playing Championship football for Donegal this year.

The 2012 and 2014 All-Star goalkeeper is currently based in Qatar but had commuted to line out for Ballyboden St Enda’s, as the Dublin club went onto win the AIB All-Ireland Club Championship.

Colm Keys in The Irish Independent says: “It is understood that Durcan has committed to staying on in Qatar and does not intend returning home for the foreseeable future.

“Durcan left for the Middle East, where his wife was taking up a teaching position, after last year’s Championship. He continued to commute back to Ireland to play for his new club Ballyboden St Enda’s as they swept to Dublin, Leinster and All-Ireland titles.

“The same arrangement can’t be put in place at inter-county level. Donegal manager Rory Gallagher had left the door open for the double All-Star to return in the hope that he would be back in Ireland for the summer.”

Michael Boyle played championship football for Donegal in 2005 and 2009 and the Termon netminder also featured in the Allianz League in 2015.

He has returned to training following a cruciate injury sustained last year and is expected to be fit in the next month or so.

In this year’s Division 1, it was Aodh Ruadh’s Peter Boyle and Mark Anthony McGinley from St Michael’s who shared the goalkeeping responsibilities and Danny Rodgers from Dungloe featured in the Dr McKenna Cup.
