Paddy Carr to attend SFC games as Fanad native poised to bid for Donegal job

Paddy Carr is set to run the rule over some of this weekend’s Donegal Senior Football Championship games as he eyes up a tilt at the vacant Donegal manager’s job.

A native of Fanad, Carr, currently managing Ballymun Kickhams in Dublin, is expected to be in attendance at Championship games in Donegal on Saturday and Sunday.

The deadline for applications or nominations to succeed Rory Gallagher is not until Saturday-week, August 26, at 6pm.

It is now increasingly likely that the Gaeil Fhánada club will submit a nomination on behalf of Carr at some stage in the next nine days.

It is understood that a number of clubs in his native area have teased the possibility with Carr in the last week.

Carr, based in County Meath, was previously nominated and interviewed for the role in 2014, when Gallagher was selected. Prior to Jim McGuinness being appointed in 2010, Carr was the only other candidate said to have given an application any serious thought.

A son of Barney and Dot Carr, originally from Shanagh in Fanad, he has been residing away from Donegal since a young age.

He played for Donegal in the 1980 Ulster SFC and has managed the Louth seniors and the Meath minor footballers.

He guided Kilmacud Crokes to All-Ireland Club glory in 2009 and has also managed Burren in Down and St Brigid’s in Roscommon in recent years.

He took Burren to two Down SFC finals and saw St Brigid’s reach the Roscommon decider having won four Dublin crowns, two Leinsters and an All-Ireland with Kilmacud.
