Opponent confirmed for Brett McGinty’s next pro showdown

BRETT McGinty will face Josh Hodgins in his second pro fight later this month.

McGinty made a successful transit into the pro ranks with a points win over Jan Ardon in December.

Now, the St Johnston man will feature on a Mick Hennessy-promoted show at the Coventry Skydome Arena on May 22.

The evening is headlined with the all-out war between Sam Eggington and Carlos Molina for the Vacant WBC Silver Middleweight Championship, with the Channel 5 cameras rolling for the bouts.

McGinty, a former Commonwealth Youth silver and European Schoolboys bronze medalist, derated Ardon in a six-rounder in December.

The former Oakleaf ABC puncher is training under Ricky Hatton in Manchester and the 22-year-old had a long wait to make his pro debut – that time lengthened by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Hodgins, McGinty’s next opponent, is 0-2, having lost to Tom Cowling and Idris Virgo in 2020. The 30-year-old is a latecomer to the professional world and this should be a chance for McGinty to add another win to his resume.

McGinty-Hodgins will be a four-round middleweight bout.

Monaghan super-lightweight Stevie McKenna will also feaure on the May 22 card with the unbeaten 24-year-old – who has yet to go the distance – to face an as-yet unconfirmed opponent.
