Ollie Horgan: Doherty, Mailey clash was ‘as bad as I have seen’

Finn Harps manager Ollie Horgan said a sickening clash of heads that saw two of his players hospitalised last night was ‘as bad as I have seen’.

Goalkeeper Harry Doherty and defender Packie Mailey were taken to Letterkenny General Hospital by ambulance after colliding in the 69th minute as they contested a long ball.

Doherty came off worst. The Cockhill man was motionless as he lay on the Finn Park pitch.

The game was stopped for 25 minutes as medics attended to the players.

Mailey was able to walk, albeit groggily, back to the clubhouse before being taken by ambulance to hospital.

Mailey was stitched up and released home again, but Doherty was admitted to hospital and kept in for further assessment.

“I have seen a lot in football, but that’s as bad as I have seen to be fair,” Horgan, who visited his goalkeeper in hospital today, said.

“With Harry, it was pretty bad. Packie was conscious and moving. With Harry, it wasn’t so straightforward, but thankfully he’s come around and is fine again.

“Your only concern at a stage like that is the well-being of the players.

“They’ll be out of action for a long time but, look, it could have been a lot worse.”
