LIFFORD STRABANE AC’S BRENDAN O’DONNELL continued his excellent form at the weekend at the Ulster Schools Athletics finals in Antrim.

The St Eunan’s College student – who has thrown the European Youth Olympic Festival standard several times already this year – broke the Ulster Schools Intermediate Hammer record when winning that event with a throw of 66.84m.

It surpassed the old record of 63.17m held by Andrew Doyle since 2009.

Conor Breslin (Deele College) finished second in the same event with a throw just over 44m.

O’Donnell also won silver in the Intermediate Boys High Jump with a new best of 1.80m, the same height as the winner and beaten only on countback.

Olivia Cuskelly (Loreto Letterkenny) won the Junior Girls Hammer with 39.80m while Shane O’Donnell (St. Eunans) finished 3rd in Junior Boys Hammer with 27.46m.

Claudia Cuskelly (Loreto) dominated the Intermediate Girls Walk to take gold in a new best of 13 mins 20 seconds.

Tom Mullen (Holy Cross Strabane) comfortably won the Intermediate Boys 400m Hurdles in a time of 59 seconds while Shannon Craig (Royal & Prior Raphoe) overcame a bout of flu to take a hard earned bronze in the Intermediate Girls High Jump.

Sarah Crawford (Holy Cross Strabane) threw over 26m to take bronze in Junior Girls Javelin while brother Gareth (Holy Cross Strabane) also took bronze when throwing over 52m in the Senior Boys Javelin.

There was also a good performance from Alan McGinley (Royal and Prior) in Senior Boys 800m when finishing 5th in 1 min 59 secs.
