Neil McGee could break a Donegal record against Tyrone

Neil McGee will break new ground for a Donegal footballer if he faces Tyrone in two weeks’ time.

The Gaoth Dobhair man is set to make his 66th Senior Championship appearances in Donegal’s colours.

Yesterday evening, when he replaced the injured Eoghan Ban Gallagher in the 19th minute of the win over Roscommon at Dr Hyde Park, McGee calm in for a 65th SFC game, equaling the record of Christy Toye and Karl Lacey.

McGee missed the Ulster final win over Fermanagh through a suspension, following his red card in the semi-final win over Down.

But the 32-year-old is back in the groove again and will make his 170th Tir Chonaill appearance when Donegal meet Tyrone in Sean MacCumhaill Park. An All-Ireland semi-final place is on the line and it’s just the sort of cauldron in which McGee has flourished over the years.

McGee is gaining on the record (173) of overall appearances, held by his 2012 All-Ireland winning team-mate Colm McFadden.

He made 51 consecutive Championship appearances over an 11-year period before a red card against Fermanagh in 2016 meant he missed a drawn semi-final with Monaghan.

Frank McGlynn made his 62nd Championship appearance (his 164th in all) in Roscommon, while captain Michael Murphy kicked nine points on the occasion of his 140th overall and 60th Championship appearance for Donegal.
