Murphy goal sets Glenswilly on their way to win in Milford

MICHAEL MUPRHY struck a first goal as a fresh-faced Glenswilly got their Regional League campaign off with an away win in Milford.

Milford 1-13 Glenswilly 3-12

At Moyle View Park, it was the visitors managed by Pauric Bonner for the first time who went in with a two-point lead at half-time, 1-4 to 0-5. Leon Kelly and Shaun Wogan added second half goals.

Although Glenswilly had most of the ball, Milford had fashioned three decent goal chances in that first half with Christopher Barrett and Luke Barrett dragging shots wide and Matthew McLaughlin having to be content with a point after his shot clipped the crossbar on the way over.

Glenswilly were 0-4 to 0-2 in front when Murphy started the move himself that led to him scoring the opening goal. He had too much power for TJ Evesson whilst on the run and having played a neat one-two with Kealan Dunleavy then planted past Shaun Gallagher in the hosts’ goal.

Shane McDevitt, a Glenswilly point-scorer in the first half, was stretchered off early in the seconds with a seven-minute delay to proceedings. Following that, Wogan and Cathal McGettigan traded points to leave Glenswilly 1-6 to 0-7 in front halfway through part two before Dunleavy’s second point put the away team three up.

Leon Kelly tucked home a second Glenswilly goal on 48 minutes from close range following untidy defending that saw Milford fail to get the ball clear from both Murphy and Wogan.

Milford hit back with a fine goal on 56 minutes when McGettigan marking into the chest from’s Evesson raking ball and opting to play on to shoot past Frank Carberry. McGettigan would fine the day with a fine 1-5 total.

It meant Milford were back to within a kick of the ball, 2-9 to 1-9 down, with a stack of injury time due – so much so White had the mid-half water-break after the goal.

Deep into injury time, Gavin Grier brought Milford back to two before the impressive Dunleavy put arm’s length between the sides again. Oisin Crawford, a Glenswilly replacement, could’ve put the issue to bed in the 66thminute only to see a shot on goal hop swide.

Ten minutes into the red, Wogan scored a third Glenswilly goal having claimed a dropping ball.
