Caoimhe Walsh is on cloud nine this week after becoming the Mulroy College hero in Wednesday’s All-Ireland final win.
Walsh scored twice as Mulroy overcame St Peter’s CS from Passage West in Cork – who had beaten Mulroy in the last two finals – to win the FAI Schools Senior B crown in Dublin.
Walsh netted a late equaliser in normal time and pounced for a precious match-winner in extra-time as Maria Ryan-Carr’s team bagged the silverware thanks to the 2-1 win.
“They had beaten us two years in a row so we weren’t letting them get three-in-a-row,” Walsh said.
“It was a great feeling to score. We were worried a bit when we went a goal behind.
[adrotate group=”46″]“A lot of girls were cramping in extra-time. It was very tough to keep going.”
Walsh secured the famous win when she took receipt of a pass by Kellyann Buchanan and her finish was true, giving Katie Irwin no chance of a save.
Walsh said: “It was such a good feeling. I couldn’t wait to get over to the rest of the team. All of us were just so happy. It’s an amazing feeling.”
Walsh and Zoe Green, the Mulroy captain on Wednesday, were part of a team from the school that won the title in 2014, a side that included the likes of Lucy O’Flynn, Mariosa Friel, Lianne Boyce and Amanda Callaghan.
Walsh said: “We won every Ulster we were in I think, but bar that time three years ago we could get over the line in the All-Ireland. We were never far away.
“We trained hard this year. We were out twice a week and that really helped us. Maria and Natalie (McFadden) had us well prepared. They’re brilliant coaches. Shane Barr did some stuff with us last week and that really helped too.”
Kerrykeel woman Walsh, who has been capped by the Republic of Ireland at under-16 and under-17 level, plays her club football with Derry City and also lines out for the Donegal Minor Ladies GAA team.
While she’s hoping for an international call-up again soon, Walsh for now will live in the moment of her heroics in Wednesday’s final – and the joyous scenes her deadly double created.
She said: “It was a great feeling getting the cavalcade into Milford and all the people being out at the school waiting on us.”
