Minor Championship changed, Buncrana Cup cancelled

THE draw for the 2020 Ulster minor championship has been changed, while the 2020 Buncrana Cup has been scrapped.

These were among a number of big decisions made by the Ulster Council tonight in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

A meeting of the Ulster Competitions Controls Committee (CCC) was held via tele-conference.

Donegal’s minors had been due to host Down in the 2020 Ulster MFC.

The competition was due to start with the Preliminary Round game between Derry and Cavan this weekend and this has been cancelled.

The minor championship will now become a straight knockout competition.

The draw will now mirror the senior version, meaning Luke Barrett’s Donegal will be at home to Tyrone.

The games will, the Ulster Council, be played as ‘curtain raisers if, or when, it is deemed suitable.’

The 2020 Ulster Minor League has been cancelled, as have the 2020 Ulster club football leagues.

The U16 Buncrana Cup has also been cancelled meaning no further games for Ryan McKinley’s charges.

The Ulster Council said: “These difficult decisions were taken in an effort to create more space in a tightening calendar, to allow our counties to make contingency plans for their respective club competition.”

Earlier today, the GAA announced the postponement of the start of the 2020 senior championships and say they do not expect any play until July ‘at the earliest’
