Milford post first win of Division 1 campaign – at Glenswilly

A STIRRING SECOND HALF was enough to see Milford post a fine victory at Glenswilly this afternoon.

Glenswilly 0-9 Milford 1-14

The sides were level at 0-5 apiece at the break but Danny O’Donnell’s side put on the burners after after the break to win comfortably; it was their first win of the campaign.

A goal from Gavin Grier nine minutes from time eventually put the toothless hosts, who badly missed Neil Gallagher at centre-field, out of their misery.

After an encouraging draw in Towney against Kilcar a couple of weeks back, Milford were taken back to ground with a considerable bump last weekend when they were well beaten at home to Aodh Ruadh.

This afternoon, they trailed 0-4 to 0-2 on 19 minutes with Gary McFadden and Shane McDevitt both scoring twice for the hosts, while Cathal McGettigan and Gary Merritt were on the mark for Milford.

Caolan McGettigan, the Milford goalkeeper, had to be on his toes to save well from a slapped Joe Gibbons attempt on 15 minutes after Brian Farrelly had delivered the ball in.

However, Milford managed to get in at half-time on terms and might’ve even had a goal themselves when Philip O’Donnell in the Glenswilly goal saved from Kyle Black.

The tit-for-tat of that first half looked to be seeping into the second with Milford edging ahead 0-7 to 0-6 on 41 minutes with Merritt scoring his third point of the day, this time with a splendid outside of the boot effort.

But when Milford managed to move up a gear or two, they sat in and broke more and more effectively the longer the game went on. Christopher Barrett, Cathal McGettigan and then TJ Evesson all pointed to open up a healthy 1-10 to 0-6 lead on 50 minutes.

When Glenswilly struggling to make the ball stick inside, Milford struck the killer blow nine minutes from time when Grier smashed high past O’Donnell from a rapid move.

McGettigan, David Curley and Evesson all scored late points for Milford and although Glenswilly did reply through efforts from McFadden, Ciaran Bonner and Ryan Diver, they were beaten for the first time at home this season.
