Michael ‘Owen’ McLaughlin to fight for New England title next month

MICHAEL ‘OWEN’ MCLAUGHLIN will fight for the New England welterweight title next month in Boston.

The Carndonagh southpaw (11-1-1) meets veteran Shakha Moore (12-21-3) at the House of Blues on a bumper St Patrick’s weekend fight card on Saturday, March 19.

McLaughlin has not fought since last June when he defeated Roberto Valenzuela in Quincy 40-36, 40-36, 40-36.

McLaughlin has seen previous aims at a title in America fall through, but now the 31-year-old is set to take part in the big fight night hosted by Murphys Boxing, to whom he is aligned.

Moore is a 39-year-old from Connecticut who stands before McLaughlin and the New England title that could open bigger doors for the Donegal man, who has been in the pro game since 2010 when a contest with Valentin Stoychev was ruled a draw at the Aura Leisure Centre in Letterkenny.

In the main bout on the night, Stephen Ormond challenges Marcos Jimenez for the lightweight IBF Intercontinental Championship.

The New England lightweight championship fight will be between Carlos Candelario and Matt Doherty, with TJ Doheny defending his PABA super bantamweight title when he faces Gerardo Marin Hernandez.
