Oisin Merritt and the Irish Cerebral Palsy team will take on the Netherlands on Wednesday in a 5th-9th place semi-final at the IFCPF World Championships in Argentina.
Ireland qualified out of their group on goal difference with Merritt played every minute of the last two games (a 7-0 win over Spain and a 5-0 loss to Ireland) having come in at half-time during a 3-3 draw with Canada.
Ballybofey United clubman Merritt was this year given the go-ahead to return to competitive sport after cheating death following a horrific accident.
But yesterday, Ireland lost 5-0 to Russia in a quarter-final.
A lack of concentration let Russia in for their first goal on 16 minutes with the Irish legitimately feeling a little hard done by.
Just four minutes later the Russians got in behind the Irish defence with a fantastic counter attack to clinically score their second of the day.
With Ireland pushing for a goal, a quick counter attack from Russia resulted in their third goal and Ireland’s dreams of a World Championships Semi Final berth destroyed.
With the sweltering heat taking its toll on the Irish players Russia took advantage with two quick goals in the 44th and 50th minute.
