SOMMER LECKY goes in search of a European medal this afternoon in Tbilisi.

The Finn Valley AC woman is in the high jump final at the European Youth Athletics Championships in the Georgian capital.

The Castlederg native was a bronze medal winner at the European Youth Olympic Festival last year, also in Tbilisi and Irish Athletics Team Manager Patsy McGonagle says a place on the podium is possible again.

“She is a medal zone athlete,” McGonagle told Donegal Sport Hub.

“She may need to clear a p.b height but she went clear at every height to 1.78 metres to get to the final.

“She is a proven competitor at Championship level, a case in point was the European Youth Olympic Festival last year.”

Lecky safely advanced to the final, clearly the bar comfortably at 1.78m.

In a rich vein of form having won National Senior and Tailteann Games titles of late, Lecky heads into the final with confidence high.

Last year, she leapt her p.b of 1.80m to win a bronze in Tbilisi.

The high jump final gets underway at 1.35pm.
