RYAN MCCONNELL might be on his way to Ballinamallard United – but the Letterkenny man has penned a new contract at Finn Harps.

Defender McConnell has joined former Harps assistant manager Gavin Dykes at Ballinamallard, who have also recruited midfielder Liam Flatley from Harps.

While Flatley has made a permanent switch to the Irish League Premier Division side, McConnell has joined on a six-month loan deal.

Ahead of that move, McConnell has agreed a one-year extension of his contract at Harps, which will see him remain on the books at Finn Park until the end of the 2017 season.

McConnell, a Republic of Ireland Under-19 international, was handed a professional contract by Manchester United in 2014 after spending time at the academy of the Red Devils and he has captained the United Under-21 team.

He was released by United in the summer of 2015 and late last year agreed terms with Harps.

“Finn Harps F.C. wish Ryan well and hope to see him back for pre-season in January,” a Harps statement read.

“The club would also like to thank Liam Flatley well in his future career after he signed for Ballinamallard last week.”
