McColgan the hero again as Inishowen Ladies win Under-18 Inter-League final

AOIFE MCCOLGAN’S DREAM month got yet another piece of All-Ireland glory this afternoon.

Inishowen Ladies League 1 Metropolitan Girls League 1

After extra-time. Inishowen win 4-3 on penalties

The 16-year-old, who played for the Donegal senior ladies GAA team in their Division 2 final win over Westmeath, was the hero today with three penalty shoot-out saves in the Under-18 Inter-League final final.

McColgan saved three times as Inishowen won on sudden death spot-kicks and in normal time the Carndonagh Community School student made a brilliant save from a Lauren Keeler penalty.

Inishowen took the lead when the returned Sarah Jane McDonald slotted home after latching onto a pass from Alison McGonigle.

Two minutes from the end, Rachel Dipeoulo struck a dramatic equaliser for the Metropolitan girls.

McDonald had a half chance on 28 minutes, but the ball slipped away from her at the vital moment.

The first half was one of few clear-cut openings, but in the second half Shania McGonigle hit the bar from 20 yards before McColgan saved well from Keeler’s penalty.

In the shoot-out, Inishowen had two chances to win it, but they did so at the third attempt, in sudden death, through Kate McClenaghan’s goal.

Ella McLaughlin, Alison McGonagle and Shania McGonigle scored the other Inishowen penalties.
